Just like the introduction of the award winning Xterra in 2000, Nissan has raised the bar for all compact sport utility vehicles again with the introduction of the 2002 Xterra. The 2002 model features a dramatic restyling of the front end, a supercharged V6 engine option (the first in the compact SUV class) and a revised interior with a new instrument panel. The 2002 Xterra went on sale nationwide in August 2001. Highlights of the 2002 Nissan Xterra sport utility vehicle include:

  • New front fascia, round headlights, hood with 48mm "power bulge"

  • Choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission (XE, SE-SC)
  • Standard part-time 4-wheel drive with 2-speed transfer case
  • Up to 2,269 kg (5,000-lb) towing capacity

  • Foot-operated parking brake (replaces dash-mounted pull-type brake)
